My class of third graders started working with PNF in January when we partnered up for Random Acts of Kindness Month. We created "Kindness Kards" (www.kindnesskards.org) and Peach included them with all her shoes for the month of February.
The kids in my class thought the shoes were "super cool" and they instantly became fans. We talked a lot about how those shoes would make you feel better if you were sick, and since they are kids, they could relate. We got to see a pair of PNF in person when one of our fellow Edy Ridge Wolves, Liam, got his pair.
The kids were so excited to see a pair in person. We worked all year doing "heart work" (things for others) and at the end of the school year, I thought it would be a fun culminating activity for the kids to find ways to raise money to sponsor a pair of shoes. I made a deal with them, if they could raise $25 (less than $1 per student) I would put in another $25 and we could sponsor two pairs.
I talked with them about ways they could earn a dollar or two - doing chores, helping neighbors, etc. I felt it was important for the money to come from them, versus asking their parents. We talked about how if they got the money from their parents, it would be their parents sponsoring the shoes and they wouldn't feel like it had come from them.
The money came pouring in! I had kids making bacon for breakfast for one dollar, kids setting the table and emptying the dishwasher, kids walking dogs, kids getting money out of their piggy banks. It was so heartwarming! I even had one student bring an entire $25 in - he did the dishes for a whole week! In the end, we were able to sponsor three pairs of shoes - two for boys who were close to the age of my students and a little girl. When the shoes would be posted, I would copy them and show the kids the next day. There was always excitement over what the shoes looked like. We also made some get well cards for all three kids before the year was over and I was in contact with two of the moms, so being able to thank the kids for them was huge. They were so excited to see the shoes ON the kids! I also sent the families of my students pictures of the shoes and a quick bio on the kids so they could continue to support them.
It was an amazing experience for my class to be a part of Peach's Neet Feet this year in more ways than one. This is something that they will always remember doing. I think it's so important that we foster a sense of giving back and thinking of others with our younger generation. We so appreciate Peach letting us be a part of her wonderful organization this year I look forward to introducing PNF to my classes in the future!--
